Headaches, and in fact, any sort of pain, are an invisible illness - no one knows that you’re in pain unless you tell them.
Did you know that headaches can affect children, teenagers and adults, they are the most common form of pain that we experience and they are one of the major reasons that people are unable to go to work or school.
Headache pain can be anything from mild to completely disabling, preventing the person from going about their daily activities. Some last a short period of time, some can last for days or weeks.
So why do we get headaches?
There are many reasons actually, some include:
Reactions to certain foods or drinks
Low hydration levels
Emotional stress
Hay fever
Hormonal changes
Poor sleep
Weather changes
Toxicity e.g. too much alcohol, certain medications, exposure to some chemicals/perfumes
Different types of headache
Headaches can be divided into five main groups:
Migraine
Tension headaches
Trigeminal headaches (from the nerve that comes from your head to your face)
Primary other headaches
Secondary headaches (headaches that happen as a result of some other condition e.g. hormone changes, back or neck issues)
And what can you do about headaches?
Eat regularly and make sure that your diet is supportive – that you don’t have foods or drinks that you are intolerant or allergic to.
Make sure you have enough relaxation time to ease stress – it doesn’t have to be complicated, a few minutes outside (preferably without your phone), have a listen to what’s going on around, maybe have a cuppa. Just take a break.
Make sure you have enough sleep – it’s really easy to deprive ourselves of the rest that we really need so have a think to see if you are getting enough sleep and take measures to help if you’re not.
Take regular exercise
Ensure you drink enough fluids
And most importantly, if there is a root cause for your headache, try to sort that out.
